The Truth About The Gym and Skincare

Are you working out, eating clean, drinking lots of water, and still having acne breakouts? Then the following could be the reason why.

Well, I remember I would have acne breakouts, from hormonal acne to fungal acne. So I decided, not long ago to start researching about my skin and what might be the cause of it acting up.

I found out that my gym skin care routine was the root of my acne breakouts.

I touched the surfaces of the gym equipment, mats and altogether, touched my face.

Touching the surfaces of gym equipment can cause a lot of bacteria to carry on in your hands, such that when you touch your face it settles on it, causing clogging of pores and in return, acne breakouts begin to come up.

So, what should I do to my skin during pre and post-workout?

Here are 8 ways to do your face well right now!

1. A clean face

Do not visit the gym with make up on, at least do not work out with make up on. Sweat and make up just messes up everything and might have the possibility of clogging your pores.

Cleanse your face gently and apply a very thin layer of moisturizer to help with that skin moisture. Avoid using a heavy layer because clogging of pores can occur at this moment too.

2. The right gym towel.

Alright, we always want to walk in the gym with a towel incase we sweat right? But are you really having the right gym towel?

Dermatologists recommend that the right towel for your face is that which is not too fluffy. A good example is that kitchen towel.

When a towel is too fluffy, it absorbs all the dirt and sweat and even if you wash your towel often, bacteria can still breed in the towel because they have a “fluffy” home.

So, next when you are shopping be sure to pick a nice, less fluffy towel for your face.

3. Post-workout wash.

So, you have put in a good workout and now its time to change into something else, but before you do that, cleanse your face very well but in a gentle manner.

Apply serum, moisturizer and some SPF if you have and your face is ready to hit outside. But your body is not.

Hit the shower and make sure to clean very well along the neck, chest and shoulder blades area. By doing this we are avoiding any bacteria to transfer back to your freshly washed and moisturized face.

You can decide to shower first and then wash your face afterwards. Your choice!

4. Skin care routine.

Once to twice a week, have a skincare routine. I prefer the Korean skincare because I have witnessed it work on skin types that have suffered acne in and out of their lives.

Just to take you through the simple notches of this skincare routine:

  • Cleanse
  • Tone
  • Essence
  • Serum
  • Eye cream
  • Acne treatment
  • Moisturizer
  • Sunscreen protector

This is a day time face routine. A night one can also be made from the same, just that if you had makeup on, before cleansing, we will have:

  • Oil based cleanser
  • Cleanse
  • Micellar water cleanse
  • Cleanse
  • Face toner
  • Face mask
5. Avoid touching your face as much as possible.

This is hard, but trying to keep our hands off the face will do us good.

Imagine touching the gym surfaces and mistakenly touching your face. All that bacteria is transferred to your face and it is not safe at all.

Having trouble with touching your face all the time in the gym?

Well, not a problem. Have a hand sanitizer with you as you visit the gym. At least after every workout and jumping from machine to machine you could sanitize regularly.

6. Drink up

I know probably you have heard this too many times and I can not stress it enough as well. Have nearly 2 to 3 litres of water per day.

It seems too much but having at least 8 glasses of water a day, keeps you hydrated and hydration means our skin will thank us by glowing even more.

7. Pull that hair back!

Yes! You saw that right. Pulling your hair back helps with less transfer of sweat from your hair to your face.

Picture this. You have not washed your hair for a week or even plus and there is build up products in your hair to keep it smooth, polished and moisturized throughout the week, and all that melts down to your hair and to your face if, for instance, your hair is flowing down.

I am 100% sure you do not want that for yourself. Because the result is clogged up pores. Too much product build up on your face.

8. Diet and Lifestyle changes.

It is true what they say: A good and healthy lifestyle helps with skin care issues and in general maintaining a good physique.

Therefore, if you want that nice glowy look together with a satisfactory body, then this right here is the gateway to that kind of life.

I’ll admit, its not easy but it will be worth it.

Some of the most important face essentials that you need to start using right now are:

1. Cleanser

Cleansing your face is very important. When we cleanse our faces we reduce the amount of bacteria and germs that settle on the skin through out the day.

I personally use black soap to help clear my acne and dark spots left by it. You can click here to see if black soap works for your skin type.

Any good cleanser is really what you need, it does not have to be black soap.

2. Face Toner

Toners are good for cleansing the remaining dirt that you may have on your face.

If you do not own a cleanser, I recommend micellar water, rose water or Apple Cider Vinegar.

I was a little bit skeptical about rose water and still am, because a lot of people complain of breakouts when rose water is used on their face and have witnessed that myself as well.

Therefore it is important to test a product to understand if it’s suitable for your skin type.

3. Face serum

Go for a face serum with either Vitamin C, E or and collagen. It doesn’t have to be too expensive. As long as it does the job you are good to go.

If you do not have a serum I advice drinking of vitamin C every morning to help you from within.

4. Face Moisturizer.

For those tackling with severe acne, oils such as jojoba and rose hip oil will be a fit,if you are having hormonal acne break out.

Tea tree oil for those stubborn acne and pimples, Vitamin E for that night deep moisturizing and Aloe vera gel for extra moisture.

If you don’t have the rich and essential oils, any good moisturizer can serve your face as well.

5. Face mask

Clay mask helps a lot with break outs and draw out excess oils from the skin and it is refreshing too.

Application once to thrice a week will suffice.

It is as simple as that. Follow the famous Korean technique if you are looking for a whole face treatment during your unwinding days of the week.

Take care of your skin! And Happy skincare day!

  1. Great post. I’m on hormonal therapy for my cancer and I sweat a lot (TMI?). I find the salt is very irritating to my face. It almost burns. I have to wash immediately after working out. I’m going to try some of your other tips too. Maybe put small bottles of toner and moisturizer in my gym bag too. Thanks.

    • You are welcome Patricia and quick recovery too😊….my hormonal acne also burns when sweat touches it i have to wipe it off almost immeadietly. So i can truly relate with the burn.

  2. This is great! I do love The Ordinary! It’s inexpensive and it works for me. I also enjoy doing masks and exfoliating! I feel so fresh after. 🙂

  3. Great tips! I’ve noticed that pulling away from my face has made a huge impact on my skin. I struggled with breakouts on the sides of my face for years before. I also totally agree on water. I can see the difference of being hydrated on my face Almost instantly.
